Keystone XL Pipeline By: Faith Szena Thesis Statement: In the U.S, the Keystone XL Pipeline is doing more harm than good. I. In the U.S, the Keystone XL Pipeline is doing more harm than good to the environment. A. Some people think the Keystone XL Pipeline could be environmentally damaging. 1. Production of oil-sands creates 17% more carbon pollution. 2. Environmental damage from a leak of heavy-oil-sands. B. Many people think the Pipeline could be contributing to global warming. C. The Pipeline will also result in environmental impacts during construction and operation. II. Some people believe that the president should not approve the construction because of what could happen to so many people and the wellbeing of our country. A. President Obama said in his June 25 speech on climate policy that he will make a decision soon on the matter of the pipeline. 1. He also said, â€Å"Allowing the Keystone pipeline to be built requires a finding that doing so would be in the nation’s interest.† 2. Our national interest will serve only if we know if the project would increase the problem of carbon pollution. B. Should our president approve this harmful pipeline, he could unite his decision with requirements to reduce the carbon intensity of extracting the tar-sands and processing it. III.
